Once a matter has been opened if anything is recorded against the matter time/financial transactions the matter number cannot be simply overwritten. Instead, you would need to move the matter to a new one and create a new matter reference, this will remove the old matter and transfer the entire contents over to a new matter with the correct matter referencing.
To complete this task, please follow the steps below:
Note: A supervisor profile is required to complete these steps.
Enter the DPSSQLConfig.
Select the Advanced tab.
Select Matter Management from the Advanced tabs, navigation pane.
Halfway down the next window, under Move Matter to a different Client, select the radio button Generate New Matter Ref.
Enter the matter ref of the matter you need to change into the field Move Matter Ref From: Matter Ref field, then click Search.
Double-click on the matter that pops up in the next window.
Enter the Client Ref into the Move Matter To, Client Ref field, then click Search.
Double-click on the client that pops up on the next window.
Click Move Matter.
Click Yes.
A message will appear confirming the matter has been moved and the next sequential matter number for that client will display. All time and transactions will be imported over to the new matter.
